Some parents are pushing the envelope when it comes to naming their little ones. With over 140 million babies born yearly, it’s no wonder that names can range from classic to downright bizarre. One soon-to-be mom recently took the plunge into uniqueness and chose a name that is so strange that it is literally a crime. She decided to name her first child Arson. Yes, you read that right! The name choice has led to a heated family debate that made its way to social media.
The pregnant woman's sister shared the story on Reddit, asking for opinions on whether she was wrong to be concerned about the name. It all started at a dinner when she expressed disbelief after hearing about Arson. “Are you being serious?” she asked her sister, prompting a defensive response from the mom-to-be. "Yeah, we like the name it's unique," she responded, to which her younger sibling replied, "That name sucks and you're naming her after a felony crime." Offended, the mom-to-be and her boyfriend quickly left, and the pregnant woman later sent an angry text to her parents, accusing them of raising her sister to be "an opinionated brat with no respect." She also was mad her parents didn't stick up for her and her name choice.
Redditors chimed in, many agreeing with the sister's viewpoint. One comment read, “That name sucks and you're naming her after a felony crime.” Others suggested that parents should consider the implications of their name choices on their children's lives. Interestingly, some commenters defended the name, pointing out its Arabic origins meaning "attractive person." One even wrote, "I am not native English or Arabic, but I have definitely encountered the name a few times."
The sister did attempt to reach out with an apology, but the soon-to-be mom has left her hanging, ignoring her texts and calls.
