Gambia: President Jammeh in talk with African leaders on election outcome and handover

< 1 min read

President Buhari, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, who is the current Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra-Leone and out-going President of Ghana, John Mahama on Tuesday met incumbent President Yahya Jammeh at the State House to try to persuade him to agree “to leave office” after his election defeat.

After the surprise victory of Adama Barrow in the country’s election on December 1, Jammeh quickly conceded defeat. However, in an about-face on Friday that drew international condemnation, the former coup leader denounced the results.

Jammeh plans to contest the result at the Supreme Court, raising the prospect that the opposition victory that was poised to end 22 years of autocratic rule will be overturned.
