Andy Murray has been named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2016 through a public vote.
Andy Murray was the hot favourite for the big award, he was then confirmed after the result of the public vote was unveiled in a live ceremony at Birmingham’s Genting Arena.
Other contenders were boxer Nicola Adams, Gareth Bale, Alistair Brownlee, Sophie Christiansen, Kadeena Cox, Mo Farah, Jason Kenny, Laura Kenny, Andy Murray, Adam Peaty, Kate Richardson-Walsh, Nick Skelton, Dame Sarah Storey, Jamie Vardy, Max Whitlock and Danny Willett.
The following awards were also presented at the event:
Team of the Year: Leicester City FC
Coach of the Year: Claudio Ranieri
Young Sports Personality of the Year: Ellie Robinson
Overseas Sports Personality of the Year 2016: Simone Biles
Life Achievement Award – Michael Phelps
